Cannabis comes in a variety of colors. Most of them are just different shades of green. Both the pistils and the resin help give cannabis its distinct look. However, there are a few strains that exceed in the color department.
Purple strains are some of the most loved and prized strains on the planet. Until recently, however, the only purple cannabis came from stressing the plant. Plants grown outdoors and exposed to cold temperatures tend to develop a purple pigment.
The reason? Anthocyanins are a group of pigment molecules that give plants their color. This is true of the cannabis plant too. That said, cannabis has a great deal of anthocyanins. Further, they also can turn the entire plant a deep hue of purple. This includes the leaves, buds and stems.
Today selective breeding and genetics allow growers to produce purple plants without stressing the plant. Here is a list of our top choices.
This is a sativa dominant which delivers on both the cerebral high of a Haze with the resin content of the strongest indicas. For this reason, it is also a highly popular and sought after strain. Its genetics are believed to have come from a Purple Thai and Haze.
The strain was named after Jimi Hendrix’s song for its colour plus its Haze ancestry. The plant grows to an average height of between 110-150cm. It will yield on average, about 100 grams per plant. The flower period is between 50-65 days.
And the high? It will take you on a long a deep trip into euphoria. The taste and aroma are also very pleasant. The smoke is reminiscent of sweet, earthy berries.
Two incredible indicas were bred to produce this strain based on potent U.S indica genetics. Purple Kush and Pre ’98 Bubba Kush have produced this potent and 85% indica that is also magnificently purple. The plant is compact, resistant to challenging environmental conditions and flowers in 60 days. Grown outdoors in late September, each plant can yield up to 800 grams.
The strain also has a delicious fruity scent that resembles freshly cut pineapple. The strong body stone also makes this strain highly popular with medical users. In larger quantities, this strain will quickly induce a deeply pleasurable and unbreakable couch lock.
This powerful hybrid has lovely sprinkles of purple leaves as it grows. Some believe it looks a bit sinister. Regardless, visually, the purple colour and size of the dark buds make an impression. Purple Trainwreck is also a highly intriguing hybrid that smells of citrus and hot spices. The flavour is an intense mix of lemon, pine and lavender. This 20% THC strain creates a high that is cerebral, and almost psychedelic at first. It then develops into a satisfyingly deep relaxation.
When cultivated in a grow room, this baby takes only 60-65 days to develop large, candle-shaped buds with a pungent aroma. A good harvest can yield up to 550 grams per square meter of plant. Outdoors, this plant can grow to 2.5 meters and yield between 700-900 grams.
This indica variety has been bred to withstand challenging outdoor conditions. In fact it thrives in gardens where climate and temperature are unpredictable and on the chilly side. Best harvest time is September or October.
Its heritage is Thai crossed with Dutch strains. It is that which makes this hardy plant so self-sufficient. It will also top 2 meters if you let it, with thick stems and bushy leaves. It may not be a top yielder, but there is also very little wastage. Expect about 500 grams of good quality marijuana per plant.
Sweet Purple creates a lucid, brainy high. The odour is deliciously minty and herbal. This is an indica “dominant” although actually a 50-50 indica sativa mix. The lovely purple buds only add to the overall pleasing experience.
Purple #1 is a world-renounced classic that dates from the early ‘80s. This strain even has its own dedicated fan base. It is popular not only for its uniquely purple colour but also its great high. The lavender buds are also soaked in resin. This 50/50 sativa-indica mix can yield between 250-350 grams per plant. THC content ranges between 11-12%.
The high is not as long lasting as other strains, but is more than compensated for by the quality of the experience. This is more of a cerebral stone.
This is also a plant that thrives outdoors, and flowers fast. It was bred by combining an Afghani purple with local sativas to survive European growing conditions. By the time the majority of flowers have turned purple, you know it is harvest time.
Deep Purple is a powerful strain with many intriguing ancestors starting with Purple Urkle. The result is a short, stocky plant that grows slowly, with average yields. The product, however is of unbelievable quality. The potency is popular with medical users who embrace this as a way to say goodbye to pain.
This is a 90% indica plant. Due to its diverse background, this strain also produces a range of phenotypes. Not all of them will display the same range of colours. If you want plants with the most distinctive Purple Urkle traits, look for those with a purple touch. These are the plants that will produce the most pronounced grape and berry aroma that this strain is renowned for.
This three time Cannabis Cup champion is popular for its grapey taste and strong, long lasting stone. Created from a cross between OG No. 18 and Purple Wreck, it balances yield, potency and appearance perfectly. The leaves however are particularly pretty. They turn a deep purple when the conditions are right.
This heavy-yielding plant can create yields of between 450-550 grams per square meter when grown indoors. Outdoors, expect the purple trait to be enhanced. Flower time is between 8-9 weeks.
This 70% indica is also a great plant for beginners and experts alike. Its complex aromatic profile, including a strong purple flavour, will make you a fan.
This Purple features lovely lavender buds. It is a result of crossing Pre98 Bubba and the famous Chem 91 Skunk VA. These power genes have produced a plant that yields between 500-700 grams per square meter of plant. It will also overwhelm you with an intoxicating aroma. For that reason, particularly when in stealth grow mode, use charcoal filters.
This strain’s potency is what has made it a repeated circuit fave. Remember this is a purple that not only gets you high. You stay there for a while.
This strain is not only bright and beautiful to grow. This indica dominant is also a medical favourite for its potency. A cross between Las Vegas Purple Kush and Sin City Kush, this hybrid delivers quickly – in as little as 7-9 weeks.
This is also an exceptional medical strain. It can be used for anything from minor headaches to migraines and for serious conditions including Tourette’s, MS and cancer.
The aroma is also one of the things that makes this plant so loved. It fills the air when growing and smoked with a sweet aroma of coffee and lavender.
We felt that this list would not be complete if we wouldn’t add this beauty. Purple Cheese is one of these strains that prove that autoflowering strains can absolutely bring you quality bud.
Purple Cheese is a phenomenal crossing between a Purple #1, a Blue Cheese and the Auto #1. This plant stays nice and small, making it a perfect strain for a smaller grow-space or your small balcony.
But don’t let her size fool you. When smoked, this strain has a pretty powerful and relaxing stone, typical for her indica roots. But a nice feature of this beauty is that the level of CBD is pretty high as well, making it a very nice strain for medical use.
This mixed with her excellent taste, think cheese, fruits and a musky undertone, makes Purple Cheese a worthy add to this top list.
